CLARA WELCH

The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, a stately assisted care facility in Cooperstown, has for generations been a community landmark. AVA was honored to have been chosen to design an addition to the facility and upgrade the historical parts of the building. It was a huge loss to the community when the facility was completely destroyed by a tragic fire during the final stages of construction. On the day of the fire, our client stated, “We will rebuild.”

And rebuild we did. The new project involved historical reconstruction of the original fabric as well as an addition to create a 38,000 square foot, state-of-the-art assisted care facility. Despite designing a completely new building, our charge was to not deviate from the home-like atmosphere of the original building for both the interior and exterior.

The Home, as it is affectionately known to Cooperstonians, achieves a non-institutional atmosphere by
strict adherence to traditional building concepts, ample provision of exterior porches, no ubiquitous “grand entry” space, and having each resident room a different configuration.

Happily, the residents moved back into their new home just one year after it had been totally destroyed.
